Physical Education (PE)

Shebbear Community School Curriculum

PE & School Sport Vision Statement:

Our vision for Physical Education and School Sport is to inspire every child to develop a lifelong love of physical activity. Through inclusive, engaging and high-quality experiences, we aim to nurture confident, resilient and creative learners who work respectfully with others, challenge themselves and understand the importance of physical wellbeing. We strive to empower pupils with the skills, values and enthusiasm needed to lead active, healthy lives as responsible global citizens.

PE & School Sport Mission Statement:

Our mission is to provide a broad, balanced and inclusive PE and School Sport programme that enables every pupil to succeed and thrive. We will:

  • Deliver high-quality physical education that develops fundamental movement skills, teamwork and resilience.
  • Create inclusive opportunities so all pupils feel confident, valued and motivated to participate.
  • Encourage healthy, active lifestyles and an understanding of physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Provide a range of competitive and non-competitive sporting experiences to inspire enjoyment and achievement.
  • Promote respect, fairness and sportsmanship, reflecting the values of our school community.
  • Support pupils to become independent, curious and reflective learners who challenge themselves and celebrate success.

PE Core Values

  1. Respect

We show respect for ourselves, others and the environment. We demonstrate good sportsmanship, listen to others and value everyone’s contribution in physical activity and sport.

  1. Resilience

We challenge ourselves, persevere when activities are difficult and learn from mistakes. We understand that effort, practice and determination help us improve.

  1. Teamwork

We work collaboratively, communicate positively and support one another to achieve shared goals. We celebrate both individual and team successes.

  1. Curiosity

We are willing to try new activities, explore different sports and develop new skills. We ask questions and reflect on how we can improve.

  1. Creativity

We express ourselves through movement, problem solving and decision making in physical activity. We develop confidence to create, adapt and apply skills in different sporting situations.

Implementation:

At our school, we provide a broad, balanced and progressive PE curriculum that ensures all pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to participate successfully in physical activity and sport.

Pupils take part in high-quality PE lessons each week, where learning is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge and progressively develop skills across a range of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming. Lessons focus on developing fundamental movement skills, physical competence, tactical awareness and teamwork, while encouraging pupils to reflect on and improve their performance.

A key strength of our PE provision is our partnership with LJD Coaching Limited, who work alongside staff to enhance both the delivery and development of physical education across the school. Through this partnership, pupils benefit from high-quality specialist coaching, while teachers receive ongoing professional development and support that strengthens their confidence and expertise in delivering PE lessons.

This collaborative approach ensures that:

  • Pupils experience high-quality, engaging PE sessions delivered by skilled practitioners.
  • Teachers receive continuous professional development (CPD) through modelling, team teaching and professional guidance.
  • The PE curriculum continues to be progressive, inclusive and consistent across the school.

Physical activity is embedded within the wider life of the school. Pupils are encouraged to lead active and healthy lifestyles through opportunities such as:

  • Active playtimes and lunchtimes
  • Whole-school physical activity initiatives
  • A wide range of extra-curricular sports clubs delivered throughout the academic year, many of which are provided by LJD Coaching Limited
  • Participation in local festivals and competitions
  • Opportunities to represent the school in sporting events

These opportunities ensure pupils experience a varied and inclusive programme of sport and physical activity, enabling them to explore different interests, develop new skills and build confidence.

Assessment in PE is ongoing and informs future teaching and learning. Teachers use observations, questioning, peer and self-assessment and informal assessment strategies to monitor progress and identify next steps. This ensures learning is appropriately challenging and supports pupils in developing their skills with increasing fluency and independence.

Early Years

Physical development is a key focus within the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children develop their gross and fine motor skills through a range of indoor and outdoor activities that build strength, coordination, balance and spatial awareness. Opportunities for physical play and exploration support children in developing the foundations for lifelong physical activity.

Key Stage One and Key Stage Two

In Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils continue to develop their skills through a progressive PE curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum. Pupils experience a range of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and swimming, while developing the ability to apply skills, tactics and strategies in both competitive and non-competitive situations.

Impact:

The impact of our PE curriculum is that pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to lead active and healthy lives.

Through high-quality teaching, specialist coaching and a wide range of sporting opportunities, pupils develop confidence, competence and enthusiasm for physical activity. The partnership with LJD Coaching Limited has a significant impact on the quality of PE provision across the school. Their support enhances both pupil outcomes and staff development, ensuring PE continues to improve and remain a strength within the curriculum.

By the time pupils leave, they will:

  • Demonstrate confidence and competence in a range of physical activities.
  • Show resilience and determination when learning new skills and facing challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with others, demonstrating respect, teamwork and sportsmanship.
  • Understand the importance of physical activity for physical health, mental wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Be able to reflect on and evaluate performance in order to improve.
  • Have experienced a wide variety of sports and physical activities, both within the curriculum and through extra-curricular opportunities.

The varied extra-curricular programme and specialist coaching opportunities help pupils to discover new interests, develop talents and build a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

Ultimately, pupils leave our school with positive attitudes towards physical activity, confidence in their abilities and the motivation to continue leading active and healthy lives beyond primary school.
