Geography Vision Statement

We believe in enquiry over answer and that all learners, including the most disadvantaged, develop independent, geographical thinking through questioning, exploring and making sense of the world around them.

The key purpose of Geography at Shebbear Community School is to:

  • Equip children with the knowledge and skills needed to understand their place in the world and become informed, responsible global citizens
  • Encourage curiosity, wonder and resilience through an approach that includes enquiry when exploring places, people and environments
  • Build geographical skills, knowledge and behaviours to give children a secure foundation in the subject

By the end of year six we want all children to be able to:

  • Locate and name key countries, continents, oceans and significant physical and human features of the world
  • Compare and contrast places at a local, national and global scale
  • Use fieldwork skills including observation, recording and data collection
  • Read and interpret a range of maps, atlases, aerial photographs and digital mapping tools
  • Understand the impact of human activity on the environment and begin to consider how we can shape a more sustainable future
  • Have a secure understanding of the geographical enquiry process

Our Geography Curriculum builds skills, knowledge and behaviours to give children a secure foundation in the subject, helping them to see themselves as curious, caring citizens of a complex and wonderful world.
